As an organization, HSM has grown exponentially in the past two years into a fully-fledged health promotion charity with over 2000 participants.
HSM is a clear departure from historical approaches to health promotion, which have focused either on individual intervention or population level awareness building. HSM is a highly connected community of individuals who openly discuss the difficulties associated with challenging current drinking behaviour and changing it within their own sphere of influence.
At a cost-benefit level, HSM is a clear pioneer in effectiveness and efficiency and although exact "figures" for traditional approaches are hard to come by - HSM's are not. Currently HSM costs roughly $160 / user to run - this "figure generates a reduction of alcohol demand over three months by $978.48 / HSMer (on average). This significantly reduces the likelihood of alcohol related harms, such as drink-driving. We aim to further improve the cost-benefit outcomes of HSM in the coming year and more detail on this is included later in this report.
The HSM website enables users to create a personal profile, blog and communicate with other HSM users to share individual reflections of their sober experience amidst Australian culture.
Growing at a rate of 407% annually, HSM now has 2000 participants. We believe that the online community is the missing link between population health campaigns and individual intervention programs. HSM provides an opportunity for Australians to actively re-write our drinking culture.
This report will document the work that HSM has done in empowering everyday Australian's to actively participate in the cultural change that is required to successfully shift the burden of prolonged alcohol-related illness.
